Admiral Samuel P. Lee

Admiral Samuel P. Lee succeeded Goldsborough. Unlike his more famous cousin, the rebel leader Robert E. Lee, Sam Lee rejected secession. When asked about his loyalty, Lee famously replied "When I find the word Virginia in my commission I will join the Confederacy." Lee encouraged Cushing's independence and aggressive tendencies, but, ironically, was not considered aggressive enough to command the assault on Fort Fisher. Welles replaced him with David Dixon Porter.
