A former naval officer, Gustavus V. Fox was a politically connected businessman in March 1861. During the confusion and tension of the Fort Sumter crisis, the energetic, determined, can-do Fox created a role for himself. An impressed President Lincoln named his Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and the team of Welles and Fox made an effective team that made a major contribution to the Union victory.
